5 Movies Banned in Malaysia Based on Sexual Orientation

Beauty and the Beast is certainly not the first movie to not get past the Malaysian Censorship Board.

All it takes is for the movie to contain a gay character. That’s it.

But as of 2010, gay characters are totally allowed!

But… they have to turn straight before the movie ends.

So far, we haven’t heard of any movies that have gay people straightening up. But these are some other movies that the LPF (Lembaga Penapisan Filem) decided Malaysians shouldn’t watch.

Rent (2005)

This musical adaptation went straight to DVD.

American Beauty (1999)

Oscar winner for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Screenplay. And we didn’t get to watch it on the big screen.

Brokeback Mountain (2005)

But it’s a love story! Malaysians love love stories, right?

Bruno

Okay maybe we can get by without this not-so work of art.

Banglasia

Namewee’s name was certainly controversial, but his first two movies were not only allowed on screens, they did pretty well too. However, his fourth movie was banned. Apparently for ‘promoting homosexual lifestyles’, among other things.

What do you think about this ruling by the Malaysian Censorship Board?
